Take care of yourself, too.

You carry a lot for other people. Needing a breather, a break, or someone to talk to is part of doing this work well. It isn’t a weakness.

Take a one-minute breather

Box breathing: breathe in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4. Follow the circle.

Watch for burnout and compassion fatigue

  • Dreading work, or feeling numb about clients
  • Trouble sleeping, or thinking about clients’ stories at home
  • More irritable, cynical, or short with people you care about
  • Pulling away from friends, family, or things you enjoy
  • Using alcohol, food, or screens more to unwind

Noticing these is a signal to reach out, not something to push through alone.

Small habits that help

  • Take your breaks, and step outside if you can
  • Debrief hard sessions with a colleague or your supervisor
  • Have an end-of-day ritual that marks the shift to home
  • Keep your own appointments, including your own therapy
  • Notice one thing that went right today
